Williams, Robert. Linking Arms Together: American Indian Treaty Visions of Law and Peace, 1600-1800. Oxford: Oxford U P, 1997.

In Linking Arms Together, Robert Williams, Jr. sets out to examine and uncover the "legal ideas that American Indian peoples sought to apply in their relations with the West during the North American Encounter era." The motivation for this goal is well founded. The epistemology of European governmental relations and diplomacy in the New World has long been hashed and rehashed, while the perspective of the American Indians has either been neglected or tritely explained. Linking Arms Together corrects these historiographical shortcomings by offering a vivid account of indigenous diplomatic methods and philosophies in their encounters with Europeans.
