Movie Night

Folks.

Considering the large amount of interest for a "movie night,"next Tuesday in class we will pick a night to show a film in Schaeffer Hall. Attendance is voluntary. Like I've said before, the film that will be shown, Black Robe, qualifies for extra credit if you write a response about it.

Everyone should remember that it is unlikely we can find a weeknight that works for all. With that in mind, I think that if there is interest it would be possible to show an extra credit film once a week or bi-weekly in Schaeffer at night. The weeknight the movie would be shown would rotate so eventually all who are interested could attend. We will talk about this on Tuesday more, but I think we could work a system where someone could volunteer to pick a film, "introduce" it for 10 minutes and show it to anyone who attends. I would award extra credit to the person who picks the film to be shown and "introduces" it. If you are the "introducer" you won't have to write a response. If you attend the viewing and write a response you will earn extra credit. In any case, I think this idea has potential. Watching the movie on the projector is fun, not everyone will have to seek out these titles and find them individually and if you write your responses you can raise your final grades significantly. I encourage you all to get interested in film, historical films especially, because it can greatly facilitate your learning about the Great Plains.

I will attend and introduce briefly Black Robe next week. It was a blockbuster smash when it came out in 1991. I am showing it in our Great Plains class because of its demonstration of French-Indian history and its wonderful imagery and representation of the importance of rivers and waterways. For the history of some Great Plains areas, Iowa especially, this is a vital point to understand.
